Privacy Policy

Tearoff is a receipt vault that tracks the return and warranty deadlines on things you buy. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your data. It is deliberately short because Tearoff collects very little.

The short version

• Your receipts and purchases stay on your device, and — if you are signed into iCloud — in your own private iCloud account so they sync across your devices. They are never sent to us or to anyone else.
• Tearoff has no accounts, no login, no servers of our own, and no ads.
• We do not collect analytics, track you, or sell or share any data.

What Tearoff stores, and where

Everything you enter or scan — merchant names, amounts, dates, categories, notes, barcodes, and receipt images — is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device database.

If you are signed into iCloud, this data also syncs through CloudKit to your personal, private iCloud account. That sync is between your own devices under your Apple ID; the developer of Tearoff cannot see it. Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by Apple's own privacy policy.

Camera

Tearoff can use your device camera to scan paper receipts — three scans on the free tier, unlimited with Pro. The camera is used only while you are actively scanning. Scanned images are processed on your device (including text recognition) and stored with the matching purchase. Images are not uploaded to us.

Location

On the Pro tier, Tearoff can use your location in two ways. Both are optional and both are off until you turn them on.

Tagging a purchase with its store. When you add or edit a purchase, you can tap Set store location to save where you bought it. That single coordinate is stored on the purchase, exactly like its merchant or total, and you can remove it at any time. Nothing is captured unless you tap that button.

Reminding you when you're nearby. If you switch on proximity reminders in Settings, Tearoff takes one location reading when you open the app, compares it against the purchases you've geotagged, and notifies you if you're within about 200 metres of a store where a return window is still open. That reading is used for the comparison and then discarded — it is never written down, and no history of where you've been is ever built.

Tearoff uses "While Using the App" location only. It never asks for always-on access, never monitors regions, and never checks your location in the background.

We never receive your location. The coordinates you deliberately save with a purchase are part of that purchase's record, so if you're signed in to iCloud they sync between your own devices through your private iCloud account, which Tearoff cannot read. Nothing is sent to us or to any third party.

Diagnostics

Tearoff keeps a small, counts-only accuracy ledger on your device to gauge how well receipt extraction is working (for example, how often a value was read correctly). This ledger stores no receipt contents and never leaves your device. It is not transmitted anywhere.

Purchases

Pro is sold as an in-app purchase through Apple. Payment is handled entirely by Apple; Tearoff never sees your payment details. Purchase validation uses Apple's StoreKit on your device.

What we do not do

• We do not run any server that receives your data.
• We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your information with anyone.

Data deletion

Because your data lives on your device (and your private iCloud), you are in control of it. Deleting a purchase removes it; deleting the app removes its local data. iCloud copies are managed through your Apple ID settings.

Children

Tearoff is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age — it collects no personal information at all.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new "last updated" date.
